The Village in the Shade main character is a customizable child protagonist whose default name is Ame, according to TV Tropes. You choose their appearance and name, then build a life in Kagatsu Village while investigating their missing memories and the village’s secrets.

Name, Age, and Customization

Ame is the playable character. Their customizable appearance means there is no single hairstyle or outfit you need to use to match the protagonist.

NIS America’s official character page confirms hairstyle, clothing, and accessory customization. Opening gameplay footage also shows separate selections for bangs, hairstyle, hair color, outfit, and a neck accessory.

There is a documentation gap around naming. The Village in the Shade character directory leaves the exact naming options undocumented, while the gameplay footage shows the player entering a name. TV Tropes identifies Ame as the prefilled name. It is therefore useful as a reference name when reading character discussions, even if you choose something else.

How the Protagonist Joins Kagatsu Village

Komako is the first villager the protagonist meets, as confirmed by her official profile. She discovers the lost child and helps bring them into village life.

RPGFan’s review describes the opening arrangement: Rin, the village head, lets the protagonist stay in an abandoned farmhouse on the condition that they cultivate the adjoining field. Housing, tools, and supplies also leave the child owing money.

Receiving a home does not immediately make the protagonist an accepted neighbor. RPGFan explains that the village code discourages residents from interacting with strangers. An offering of crops at the village well marks the protagonist’s acceptance into the community.

This makes the opening farming work part of the character’s story. Establishing a home, contributing to the village, and learning its rules happen together.

What You Do as the Main Character

The protagonist connects the farming systems to the supernatural mystery. During the day, you develop the farm and get to know residents. Nighttime exploration exposes the dangers behind the village’s restrictions.

RPGFan describes the protagonist’s main activities as:

  • Farming: Clear the field, grow crops, and manage time and stamina.
  • Gathering resources: Fish, hunt, and mine in the surrounding areas.
  • Helping neighbors: Complete tasks and build relationships with residents.
  • Exploring after dark: Carry a flashlight, avoid dangerous spirits, and investigate the village’s secrets.

For relationships, Siliconera’s character guide explains that the in-game character menu displays residents’ birthdays, likes, dislikes, relationship levels, and daily conversation and gift status. Check that menu when deciding how to approach a neighbor.

The mystery of the protagonist’s identity develops alongside these routines. Their missing memories are part of the main narrative, so character explanations can reveal significant late-game events.

True Identity and Endings

Major story and ending spoilers follow.

According to TV Tropes’ character account, Ame is a god inhabiting the body of a child named Kodama. Ame answered wishes associated with the dying child and remained with them, but later lost memories of their nature and their promise.

That divine identity also explains an unusual constraint: an appropriate offering can compel Ame to fulfill a request.

Ame’s precise divine origin remains unresolved. TV Tropes interprets celestial imagery, shrine stones, and Zunushi’s description of Ame as its other half as clues that the two originated from a divided meteor. This is an interpretation, not an explicitly established explanation.

TV Tropes describes two ending outcomes involving the protagonist:

  • Ame gives up an eye, allowing Kodama to return as a peach tree sapling.
  • Ame returns the body to Kodama, allowing the child to live again while calling on them to make amends.

These revelations distinguish Ame’s identity from the customizable body the player sees throughout the game.
